We have completed the Winkins Lane Playground improvement project that began in 2019, after a Public Consultation indicated that there was a need for more play equipment for older children. As a result the PC and the Great Somerford Community Fund set about to raise funds to pay for a fantastic new climbing frame, as well as a gazebo where parents could shelter from the sun or the rain while they watch over their children.
We were very fortunate to secure a donation from Hills Group towards the purchase of the climbing frame and gazebo with a donation under the Landfill Communities Fund in partnership with Community First. Last month, Mary Hardwidge of Community First came visited the Winkins Lane Playground to present a commemorative plaque recognising their financial contribution.

We have been delighted with the positive response from parents and children with regards to the new climbing frame, which is proving really popular through these summer months, and also the gratitude from the parents for the much-needed shelter, which in addition to the existing play equipment has resulted in a playground that the village can truly be proud of.
In summer 2024 the old rotting toddlers climbing frame was replaced with this shiny new one.
The annual RoSPA safety inspection has revealed some safety improvements that we would like to make. These will involve the removal of the old “moonscape” climber (difficult to keep sufficient depth of soft woodchips under it), and the roundabout where we struggle to keep the gap between the bottom and the ground at the right level.
These two items will be replaced with some form of agility trail items such as you can find at other playgrounds, with the goal that they can also be used by larger children and even adults.
